Recursion Curve
T-Space Residency
Summer 2022, Directors Steven Holl + Eirini Tsachrelia
The universe is expanding in all directions yet in some parts it is collapsing. A black hole starts with a star that burns out and is pulled by its gravitation into a singularity. As this happens, the surrounding time and space fold in on themselves while other matter is ejected, thus creating a contradiction. This dichotomy, where something escapes from what is becoming nothing--a form of recursive folding--is the driving force in this project. Through a series of investigations, I have explored how a plane, once cut, allows for a new segment to be pulled into this cut thereby creating space. As the process is repeated, these planes come together to form a single entity.
The project brief was to design a “Cosmic Dust Pavilion.” The pavilion is sited at the edge of Round Lake and is a approx. 4,100 sqft educational facility for exhibitions, special events, and thought experiments. This is a center for observational cosmology that can exist harmoniously in the Hudson Valley ecology, and may have particular local geological exhibitions and ecological aspects.
